Skin cancer: cancer by radiation

 Skin cancer: cancer by radiation

Skin cancer, the most common type of cancer in the US, affects up to one in five Americans. There are several types, such as melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. Exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun or tanning beds is the main cause of skin cancer, as well as having fair skin, a history of sunburns, a weakened immune system, a family history of skin cancer, or exposure to certain chemicals. Symptoms may include changes in the skin, itching, bleeding, or sores that won't heal and diagnosis usually involves a physical examination and biopsy of any suspicious growths. Treatment usually involves surgery with healthy tissue being removed alongside the cancerous tissue; other treatments may include radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy. Prevention wise protecting skin from UV radiation is key and this can be done by wearing protective clothing and using sunscreen with a high SPF rating as well as avoiding outdoor activities at peak sun hours. Additionally, regular screening tests can help detect early signs of skin cancer which helps in getting treatment at an earlier stage with improved chances for a successful outcome.
